Shikita Trahan

Founder, M. Ed in Special Ed

Born and raised in the community of Seattle, WA Central District. Currently a high school teacher in Seattle Public Schools and a Professor at a local Community College. For the past 15 years, I have been working to support at-risk youth and young adults with special needs and behavioral concerns. I have also worked in partnership for 18 years with many community-based organizations in the greater Puget Sound area. As an educator, I have directed my professional path to work with youth and young adults who are searching to better their lives.

Personal/Professional Goals

"There is a growing population of Special needs students in our country. To focus in on my state, Washington, there is a growing number of at-risk youth that suffer from mental disabilities, life itself and not having the actual support needed to have a sense of success with their education.  Being that I am a minority woman, I want students to also have the opportunity to have a teacher/mentor who knows and understands these students struggles and is able to help educate and support them in obtaining their educational goals."

Experience with Diversity

"As a minority woman, I have had the opportunity to work with many different people, cultures, and families throughout my life. For the past eighteen years, I have worked for community-based non-profits in the greater Puget Sound area. My primary responsibilities have been program management; coordinating, directing, planning, and implementing programs.  I have over seven years of experience working in organizational initiatives toward supporting at-risk youth, minorities, and low-income families."

Personal Qualities

"Throughout my career, I’ve demonstrated effective leadership, a strong devotion to developing communities, and a strong desire to work with the public.  I’ve proven my ability to work with management and staff at all levels. My hands-on work experience and passion for engaging youth perfectly align with the direction I want to take in my career."
